For the first time since the maiden edition of Athletics in Schools Program (AISP), the program will be making her debut outside Lagos State, and with a new sports personalty for the project.

This time the school tour train will move to a neighbouring state and stop at one of the oldest and most popular private schools in the western region, Mayflower Private School, Ikenne Ogun State for their inter-house sports slated for Thursday, March 7th.

Mayflower Private School, has invited the organisers of AISP as one of their special guests for the prestigious occasion, after they noticed the successful impact the program had at the 22nd inter-house sports of Caleb International College, in which they won the invitational relay.

Interestingly, the AISP team have brought a twist to the running of the program at Mayflower, as they’ve chosen to go for a national coach in Oladipupo Isho, as sports icon of the day instead of usual AISP’s athlete ambassador, Oyeniyi Abejoye.

Coach Isho, is a respected figure who has trained several quarter-milers to professional level, with notable names in Abiola Onakoya and Qatari transferred athlete, Emmanuel Bamidele. He was also one of the Athletics team coaches at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and African Championships in Asaba.

While the AISP team will educate the students, parents, teachers and school authorities on the importance of sports and education, Coach Isho will spearhead the training and workout sessions of the student’s pre-competition and he’ll also have the honour of doing medals presentation.

Mayflower is a renowned school known for encouraging sports, as they topped the overall medal’s table at the maiden edition of 2018 Private School Games. They also boast of an impressive alumni list of sports professionals, with good example in Coach Buka T (grassroots coach of reigning Commonwealth Champion, Tobi Amusan).

It’ll be a great honour for the AISP team to be present at the school, as we continue to promote track and field culture among Nigerian school students.

What’s AISP about?

AISP is an initiative founded by Athletic Heat Ltd in partnership with Nigeria Athletics, created for the sole objective of promoting Track and Field culture among Nigerian secondary school students.

This promotion is done through teaching students of each schools visited the values of Athletics, benefits of participating in sports and having a professional career in any sector associated with it, while also educating on how to balance school and sports effectively.

Also key significance is paid to scouting potential talents that will be carefully selected by a professional grassroots coach.

Interestingly, the first edition of the program was held in CMS Grammar School, Bariga coincidentally the first secondary school in Nigeria, and St. Finbarr’s College, Akoka the Alma mater of the program’s athlete ambassador, Oyeniyi Abejoye; with Caleb International College, Magodo coming in as the first school in 2019.

AISP is a vision that targets at expanding to more schools in Nigeria both within the private and public school sector, with other top Nigerian professionals serving as role models and inspiration; thereby increasing Athletics enthusiasm among school students.

Finally, huge appreciation to Yesir Foundation for their continued sponsorship of the program, while we await more partners and sponsors coming on board in our follow up programs.
