Nigerian athletes are definitely on a roller-coaster of brilliant performances this season, as seven athletes have now qualified for the IAAF World Championships in Doha.
Joining the list of qualified athletes is National Champion in the 200m, Emmanuel Arowolo who shattered his PB of 20.84s, clocking a new 20.37s (-0.3m/s) for victory at Cameroon Grand Prix on Saturday, July 20.
The time is so impressive that not just is it the fastest by a Nigerian home based athlete since 2016, but it catapults him to No.2 on the 2019 Nigerian list behind Divine Oduduru, and most importantly surpasses the world champs qualifying mark of 20.40s.
This means currently the country will have at least two athletes that’ll participate in the 200m at the world showpiece, which is the first time its happening in more than a decade.
In fact the last time Nigeria was represented in this event, was at the 2015 edition when Tega Odele was the sole competitor donning the green and white colours.
Another brilliant fact is, Nigeria will have multiple representatives in both the 100m and 200m. Oduduru, paving the way to compete in both events, with Raymond Ekevwo (10.02s) and Usheoritse Itsekiri (10.07s) already qualified in the 100m.
Also not to forget the trio of Seye Ogunlewe (10.11s), Enoch Adegoke (10.15s) and Ogho Egwero (10.22s), still in good shape to surpass the qualifying mark of 10.10s. While in the 200m, Itsekiri (20.53s), Jerry Jakpa (20.57s) and Egwero (20.64s), are in the mix for the Doha mark as well.
